Summary

Diane Tavenner, founder of Summit Public Schools, offers a blueprint for a better way to educate our children, based on the revolutionary lessons, insights and methodology she and her faculty developed over 15 years at their famously successful charter schools in California and Washington, which she is now introducing to public school systems across the country that Summitt is partnering with to transform education and better prepare our children to lead fulfilled and successful lives。

Diane Tavenner founded the first Summit charter school in 2003, developing and perfecting a personalized, project-based curriculum that puts students in charge of their own learning。 The school developed a personalized learning plan for every student。 They engaged the students by engaging them in interdisciplinary, real-world projects, rather than passively learning and memorizing in a classroom environment。 They created mentorship groups, where students would talk through their goals and help each other solve problems, as well as meet one on one with their mentor, weekly。 By internalizing a sense of purpose, self-direction, self-sufficiency, collaboration, students learn the cognitive and life skills needed to navigate the next phases of their lives。 Virtually 100% of Summit's original 400 students went on to attend four year colleges。 In the years that followed, Summit opened 10 more charter schools in California and Washington, to similar success, and national recognition。

Today, Tavenner, and Summit Public Schools, are partnering with 400 public schools, across 40 states, and over 3500 teachers and 80,000 students, to bring the Summit Learning Program and teaching practices to school systems everywhere。 With generous support from Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg's nonprofit organization, which calls Summit "the future of education," and over one hundred million dollars in contributions from the Gates Foundation, Summit is revolutionizing how our children are educated。

Diane Tavenner and her team launched Summit schools after noticing that the current educational system was failing to prepare children for adulthood and their careers。With a culture of "Whatever I Takes", never giving up on kids, and always asking what is best for the student, the Summit public school network uses the scientific method on education, testing hypothesis, executing, retesting, all while cold calling the best experts to achieve their goal of making every child prepared, not just the privileged ones。I remembered how important short, medium, and long-term goal setting was while reading this book and have planned for 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 30, and 50 year goals。 Solving for the ultimate goal illuminates our individual path。I was so inspired that I sent this email to the administrator of the school my child goes to:Have you read the book Prepared by Diane Tavenner?  It is written by the founder of the Summit School network in the US that aims to get any child better prepared for college。 Unlike most high schools, though, this public high school network's focus is not only to gain admission into the best universities, but to equip students with the tools to self-learn and set relevant, challenging, achievable personal goals by themselves。  The curriculum is rooted in project-based leaning, which empowers each child to maximize their own potential in a self-directed manner。 This has many similarities with the Montessori curriculum and seems like a natural extension of [our school]'s current learning methodology tailored for high school。This book was not only eye-opening, but also affirming of the curricula that have helped me choose my own unique path。 [My wife] and I whole-heartedly recommend this book。 In a past conversation with [school founder], he mentioned his vision was not only to make alternative curriculum available to a subset of privileged families, but rather to all students in [country]。 This book may be a good case study for how to work with public education boards to enhance the capabilities of all children in [country]。 I hope this note is helpful and good luck this academic year! 。。。more

The purpose of the book is to help parents grow their children to have fulfilled life。 It provides explanations about the method that was developed and good ideas and hints。 I am missing though somehow a more structured way to present the approach。

Diane's story is inspiring。 She got to build the school of her dreams and of so many parents' dreams as well。 As a mother, I finish the book a bit sad my kid cannot attend Summit School, but also energised to do more for my community。 In the end, apart from the explicit guidance Diane lists, the message I take is: we can all try and do more, push more, allow ourselves to grow more。In all fairness though, I picked up this book as a mother willing to understand more how to guide my child, and the Diane's story is inspiring。 She got to build the school of her dreams and of so many parents' dreams as well。 As a mother, I finish the book a bit sad my kid cannot attend Summit School, but also energised to do more for my community。 In the end, apart from the explicit guidance Diane lists, the message I take is: we can all try and do more, push more, allow ourselves to grow more。In all fairness though, I picked up this book as a mother willing to understand more how to guide my child, and the book is actually the story of how Diane built the Summit School。 As a teacher, it picked my interest just the same。 However, had I not this background, I'm not sure I'd go on with the reading。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book is more about the school and it's ways to what they define success and very little that we can learn to get the child prepared。 It'd have done justice to name the book "Summit's Unique Journey" than name it "Prepared"。 Honestly it's far from helping the child get prepared in comparison to many other books that can actually help us get the child prepared。 This book is more about the school and it's ways to what they define success and very little that we can learn to get the child prepared。 It'd have done justice to name the book "Summit's Unique Journey" than name it "Prepared"。 Honestly it's far from helping the child get prepared in comparison to many other books that can actually help us get the child prepared。 。。。more

Lot of stories how Summit schools made its way !

A very strong book in how to prepare kids for life。 A clear focus is on schools and how Summit High, does things differently, but there is also applicable content for parents and a strong call to action to improve our school systems。 I loved the transported emotions and the large amounts of shared stories!

I have to admit that this book did not give me specifically what I expected。 However, what it did deliver did not necessarily disappoint。 This is not a conventional self-help book。 It is rather a chronology of a journey, told in a personal and honest voice。 Being a parent herself, made the voice all the more believable。 Luckily there is a website at the end of the book with concrete real plans to help you practice stuff that was learnt at home。 The real challenge would be to introduce these lear I have to admit that this book did not give me specifically what I expected。 However, what it did deliver did not necessarily disappoint。 This is not a conventional self-help book。 It is rather a chronology of a journey, told in a personal and honest voice。 Being a parent herself, made the voice all the more believable。 Luckily there is a website at the end of the book with concrete real plans to help you practice stuff that was learnt at home。 The real challenge would be to introduce these learnings to my kids in a way that does not overwhelm them as they have to still cope with their homework etc which just seems to be getting more and more these days。 M KhanDurban , South Africa 。。。more

I found this history of their school creation process to be helpful and plan to use preparedparents。org/

I expected more from this book than I got。 Overall some interesting thoughts on education but it seemed a bit superficial and brushing through the surface。

Belinda Wu

The book started off very interesting, later on it became less powerful, but I think this is a good book to read for anyone at any age really。 Lots of good effort, empowering。

Prepare both myself and my babyI really like the mindset and the approach the author has taken to help all the students in Summit grow! She helps me look beyond the current competitive game the education system has put most of the parents in my country into, and realise every kids can and will win the game of their own choosing:) I will come back to this book time and again I am sure for inspiration!

This book is not an instruction manual。 If you are looking for true advice, I would suggest the actual Summit pages and Youtube channels。 You will get so much more information there。 This is more of a memoir/advertisement。 And despite the other reviews, this is not a bad thing。 The only issue is that the title is misleading。If you are interested in the next generation of education, I would more than suggest this memoir。

Kerem

It was not very engaging。 More detail on the projects the kids carried out was also something I missed。

All set !

An inspirational and must read book

Fascinating look at a different angle on the purpose of school - enabling and preparing kids to be self directed learners and doers (vs the traditional model of just information knowers)。 Also didn’t realize how important project-based learning is。 Key things I want to do:- Start a once-a-month home project with my sons - sign up for the website version of this content - be better at asking questions rather than pushing my perspective on my kidsThat said, it did feel a bit like a “flex” kind of Fascinating look at a different angle on the purpose of school - enabling and preparing kids to be self directed learners and doers (vs the traditional model of just information knowers)。 Also didn’t realize how important project-based learning is。 Key things I want to do:- Start a once-a-month home project with my sons - sign up for the website version of this content - be better at asking questions rather than pushing my perspective on my kidsThat said, it did feel a bit like a “flex” kind of book / marketing for their curriculum。 。。。more

Diane tells her journey to the creation of the Summit schools, an innovative, yet obvious educational system where students take action into their own preparation for adulthood。 This is a must-read for all teachers, at all educational levels。

Yukie Takamura

Was on Bill Gates recommendation list but was not satisfying for me。 Good episodes that illustrate the evolution of the curriculum but too little practical information。

Amy

Not a parenting book at all。 It was more of an advertisement for how awesome Summit Prep schools are。 Alas, there are no Summit schools in LA so it just made me jealous, especially after almost a full year of distance learning。 This would be a good book for educators at a charter school or private school or perhaps for homeschooling。

Mike Rooney

I never expected Prepared to be as good as it is。 I think it could benefit the vast majority of people, especially parents。

Some good ideas about individualized and challenging instructions for all students, helping them discover their own interests and passions。 Also really exposes the college admissions industry。

This is a great read。 Gives you a real insight into the kind of education system we should be buidling for our children。 Wonderful ideas that i can implement at home for the children, no matter whether they are teenagers or elementary school children。 I came away with a lot of ideas and thoughts after reading this。Thoroughly recommend it。

I wanted to give this book 4 or 5 stars because it's filled with a lot of great information。 But I just couldn't get over the theme that in order to have a fulfilled life you HAVE to go to college。 It really seemed vocational and community colleges were truly looked down upon。 There was one example of a student becoming an electrician, how well he did for himself, but then years later decided to go to college and become an electrical engineer so he could go on to be fulfilled。 This just doesn't I wanted to give this book 4 or 5 stars because it's filled with a lot of great information。 But I just couldn't get over the theme that in order to have a fulfilled life you HAVE to go to college。 It really seemed vocational and community colleges were truly looked down upon。 There was one example of a student becoming an electrician, how well he did for himself, but then years later decided to go to college and become an electrical engineer so he could go on to be fulfilled。 This just doesn't sit right with me。 But overall the book was good。 。。。more

With Summit Schools Diane Tavenner has started a bold experiment to flip secondary school education on its head, as it needs to be。This book is a useful guide for both educators and parents of teenagers in how to mould kids into inquisitive, confident, and clear-headed individuals prepared for the skills the world demands。We hear a lot of the idealism this book is full of。。。the difference is that this is the narrative on the experience of a person who converted idealism into action。 Sustainable With Summit Schools Diane Tavenner has started a bold experiment to flip secondary school education on its head, as it needs to be。This book is a useful guide for both educators and parents of teenagers in how to mould kids into inquisitive, confident, and clear-headed individuals prepared for the skills the world demands。We hear a lot of the idealism this book is full of。。。the difference is that this is the narrative on the experience of a person who converted idealism into action。 Sustainable action, more importantly。 。。。more
